BADLANDS

Watched this movie today… it’s one of my very favorites. Martin Sheen is such a little badass, and Sissy Spacek is quite beautiful with the sweetest country twang. Terrence Malik is an amazing director and I am always drawn to his movies because he always works with my favorite production designer, Jack Fisk (married to Spacek funny enough) He also designed Days of Heaven & There Will Be Blood, always such lovely natural sets and amazing builds.

Every time I watch this movie, I want to run away to the woods and build a tree house and booby traps with my partner in crime. With all the intensity of the murders, it’s still quite innocent. Just two curious teenagers with a love for eachother and adventure. Makes you think twice about a life of routine… a little bit of trouble never hurt.

“No one’s gettin outa this happy, ‘specially not us. I can’t deny we had fun though.”

So with the start of 2010, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite ‘wise’ movie clips, those quick moments in movies that are actually heavier than you may notice with first viewing… little secrets to life. I intend to post many more as I think of them (and notice them too) but I wanted to get these up as a little kick start to the new year.

Before 2010!

After the tragic death of my polaroid, I decided it was time to move on and get a digital camera. Oh man, I couldn’t put it down. The colors rule on it (especially the blues n reds), never have to use a flash and the best thing- it’s oh so convenient. I threw it over my shoulder with my purse going out at night or around my back when riding my bike. We were/are inseparable. You should get one too.

Because of this camera, I wanted to see how everything looked on it, so I found myself taking pictures of some of the more everyday things. I was even taking birds-eye photos of my food! Weird. But kinda fun.

As I was collecting these photos to post, I realized I captured a lot of the same things, just in different places. I became obsessed with old trucks, colorfully painted signs and impossibly long stretches of road (never had I seen horizons so vast!). From road trips along Rt. 66 to northern California to the South Island of New Zealand, here is a collection of photos perfectly organized into the reoccurring themes I was (still am) drawn to.

Before 2010!

I had a lot of trouble deciding on what my first post would be… So! I decided with the New Year ringing in tonight, and the promise of an adventure filled 2010, I should get a few highlights of 200_ out so I’ll be ready to start a new.

Starting with my travels around Europe for a few months with my polaroid camera and 100 exposures, no more no less! Interesting how careful you become with each picture “no, this is not worth $1” and just how much people will pay you for that very picture. I got a digital camera about a year or so after this trip, but I would not have done it any other way.
